Attention Science Teachers: Registration is now open for the Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge National business

ARLINGTON, Va.–( BUSINESS WIRE )– Aug. 24, 2022–

The sixth annual Shale Science Laboratory Regional Challenge is now accepting applications for the 2022-2024 program. The Challenge-Sell USA, Inc. Sponsored by and administered by the National Science Teaching Association—encourages science teachers (grades K-12) in selected communities across the US who have found innovative ways to provide quality laboratory experiences using limited school and laboratory space. Resources, to apply for a chance to win up to $330,000 in awards, including school science lab transformation support packages valued at $15,000 (for elementary levels) and $20,000 (for middle and high school levels). The deadline for submissions is February 17, 2023.

Judges will evaluate entries based on a variety of criteria, including demonstrated science exploration and innovation in a classroom with limited equipment; performance impact and engagement with students and the community; and demonstrated a need for more professional development and science content. 27 regional winners will be selected: nine at the elementary level, nine at the middle school level, nine at the high school level. Among the 24 winners, three grand prize winners – one in each category – will be selected.

“All students deserve a high-quality science education that includes access to laboratory experiences that help them make sense of the world around them and become scientifically literate,” said Elizabeth Mulkerin, Ed.D., president, NSTA. “However, scarce funding, inadequate resources and equipment, and inadequate training prevent teachers from being able to provide their students with the laboratory experience they deserve. The Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge will not only provide teachers with the resources they need to improve their existing laboratory capabilities, but to support their instruction in the classroom.” It will also provide vocational education.”

Regional winners at the elementary level will each receive a school science laboratory makeover support package valued at $15,000 and regional winners at the middle and high school levels will each receive a school science laboratory makeover support package valued at $20,000. Each grand prize winner will receive an additional $5,000 in support to attend a future NSTA National Conference on Science Education, where they will be honored at a special evening celebration.
