Over 65? This One Thing Can Help You Live Longer – Science Says – Eat This, Not That

There are a number of healthy habits to adopt regularly that can help encourage a longer life—especially as you age. For example, maintaining a nutritious diet is so important that your body needs all the nutrients it needs to function properly. Getting a healthy dose of exercise every day will help your body stay in good shape while potentially warding off any chronic health conditions. According to data from the US Medicare Health Outcome Survey, men and women between the ages of 65 and 85 may have a longer life expectancy if they marry “until death.” That’s right!

The study was conducted by Medicare and published in the journal SSM – Population Health. Provide an example in research? According to the statistics, the average life expectancy of a married man aged 65 is 18.6 years, which is 2.2 years more than that of an unmarried man. Female participants of the same age (age 65) studied revealed a total life expectancy of 21.1 years, which is 1.5 years longer than being single at age 65.

More research agrees with the data. journal Health Psychology Couples who consider their marriages to be among the happiest are said to be about 20% less likely to experience an early death. TIME). They are actually more likely to live longer than couples who think their marriages are “not very happy.”

Why is everyone’s positivity stopped? Well, it could be for a number of reasons, according to studies, including a healthier heart and waistline. According to Mark Whisman, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of this second study, a good marriage appears to improve your health. Married people may be more likely to be encouraged to continue certain healthy routines such as exercise, healthy eating, and necessary medical checkups. Teamwork makes a dream job, right?

Whisman also points out that being supportive of each other in marriage can help individuals psychologically. Being married “gives people a meaningful role and identity, a sense of purpose in life, a sense of security,” says Whisman, “and those kinds of psychological factors can affect health.” A strong marriage “can improve mental health and well-being, which we know is related to physical health.”

Another bit of research backing up the benefits of marriage? There is a correlation between being lonely and higher rates of death. A study called the Swedish Lundby Study was conducted in Sweden. Of the 1363 participants, 296 individuals were considered to be living alone. The research involved interviews over a 13-year period. In the study, loneliness was linked to a 27% higher risk of death overall.

A team for life can be a pretty amazing thing. The key word here is “happiness” when it comes to marriage. It is not suggested that the sanctity of marriage alone will magically solve your problems and help you live longer and better. But if you’re happy with someone at that stage of life, know that having a partner for life can be a pretty amazing thing – science says so!
